Expeditionen ins Reich der Eighties-Barbaren (XIX): "Hawk the Slayer"
He wanted to come to England, he thought he could do something with the part, he liked the fun of it [...] I believe he got $100,000. He stayed in a small hotel in Soho, but on the set he shared a caravan with everyone else. There were no airs about the man, though he put me to the test at times – asking me what Voltan’s motivation was for adopting two children and so on.
We were so lucky in Hawk because we had people like Roy Kinnear, who came in to do a few lines as the Innkeeper and Graham Stark, who I’d worked with on the Pink Panther films, playing Sparrow; you always get extra from those sorts of people because they’re such distinctive character actors.Für die Hauptrolle engagierte man den Neuling John Terry, der auch in There Goes the Bride mitgespielt hatte. Zu seinen Mitstreiter*innen gehörten aber auch bekanntere Namen wie Patricia "Magenta" Quinn als "Zauberin", Carry On - Regular Bernard Bresslaw als "Gort, der Riese" und Theater- und TV-Veteran William Morgan Sheppard als "Ranulf".
I’m a Pinewood boy – and they were very kind to me, they did an all-in deal for butkus; told us we could help ourselves to anything we could find, so we went around looking at props and pieces of set and whatever we could use!
I wrote some of the score whilst on location. I would see how the scenes were coming out and then do a bit of writing or just jot down some ideas as and when I got them. It was an interesting experience because I had most of the score ready before the cameras had stopped rolling.
Hawk was a fantasy western if you like. That’s why the score has little trills and motifs on it when we see the hero or the villain of the piece; it was my homage to Morricone and also the spaghetti western score.
"The one and only" halt ...
* Die Firma produzierte später noch Prisoners of the Lost Universe (1983) und Jane and the Lost City (1987), hielt also dem Pulp-Phantastischen die Treue.

H.P. Lovecraft: The Dunwich Horror
I fear Mythos Books has missed two good landmarks for publishing the novel, first by not having it coincide with Mel Gibson’s movie The Passion of the Christ and recently with The Da Vinci Code movie. But of course this is par for my publishing course. I finished writing the novel a bit over 15 years ago! If Drums is ever published, I hope it takes off with the kind of notoriety Dan Brown’s novel has enjoyed. With luck, it may even attract a death-fatwa from Christian fundamentalists, putting me up there with Salman Rushdie. One can always hope.
His facial aspect, too, was remarkable for its maturity; for though he shared his mother’s and grandfather’s chinlessness, his firm and precociously shaped nose united with the expression of his large, dark, almost Latin eyes to give him an air of quasi-adulthood and well-nigh preternatural intelligence. He was, however, exceedingly ugly despite his appearance of brilliancy; there being something almost goatish or animalistic about his thick lips, large-pored, yellowish skin, coarse crinkly hair, and oddly elongated ears.
The sun, edging lower, lined the features beneath the white headband -- the large dark eyes, the prominent curved nose with flaring nostrils, the straggling beard that partly concealed a slightly receding chin.
"And why should we prevent him?" grated Nicodemus, his face suddenly as stern and dark as a thundercloud. "Is this earth such a paradise that we should preserve it? No, it is a vale of torment, worthy only of destruction -- and it shall be destroyed, Dositheus! For a thousand ages the Primal Gods have worked their torment upon all life, feeding upon the pain thus generated; the agony of countless victims has fed them --""And so you would destroy it all?" Dositheus shook his head sadly. "How do you know that your god will then establish a better world? Does not Him Who is not to be Named demand countless animal sacrifices here before his Temple? And have they not been thus demanded for more than a thousand years?""Aye, in order that His energies might be built up for His Return!" Nicodemus' face, now lifted skyward, shone as with a radiant glory. "In that day the skies shall roll up as a scroll, the thunders of judgement shall descend like a sea-wave upon all the lands, and all suffering shall cease!"[...]"Will you oppose His advent, Dositheus -- you, who once lost a loved one during the reign of the monstrous King Herod? No! You, Dositheus, like all who have become aware of the enormity of the suffering this world bears, know that it is better that all beings should perish and that a new dawn should supersede the long darkness!"Dositheus swallowed. "There is some truth in what you say, Nicodemus. Yet, is there not also a redeeming flavor in this life? Do you not enjoy a good meal, the drawing of a full breath, the glance of a loved one --?""Do these things outweigh the misery of those who are denied them?" snarled Nicodemus. "Does the absence of leprosy in many men outweigh the sufferings of those afflicted with it? Count each of your blessings, Dositheus, and know that for every disease you have not yet contracted, many thousands of others have -- else you would not know of that disease at all! Have no loved ones of yours been slain by Romans recently, or sold into slavery? If you feel lucky on that account, it is because you know of many others who have! Have no friends of yours been slain by bandits, accidents, avalanches --?""Peace, Nicodemus. I have experienced sorrow, as you well know. Yet, life is --""Speak not to me of life!" hissed the priest, his face rigid. "I am sick of all life! I seek that which is beyond it. Life is suffering. I seek relief from life, and so I follow the One who shall overthrow life and bring Joy to this world."
Yosef's brows knotted, his craggy face glowering down upon Miriam like a storm cloud. "I do not know you, woman. Do you declare, after all your pretense of support, that your deepest hopes are set against my will -- and your Lord's?"The woman laughed briefly, lightly. "Your will is adamant, O my father. That I well know. Yet with all your wisdom, I think that you have not yet fathomed his deepest will, which is nothing less than to serve me."

Let Me Tell You Of The Days Of High Adventure
Sorcery Against Caesar von Richard L. Tierney (3/3)
The Soul of Kephri
"Things are not justified; things simply are. We must do what we can about the possible; beyond that, we can do no more."
The Dragons of Mons Fractus
The man on the dais seemed tall, though Simon could not be sure because of the striking massiveness of his build -- as if the muscles of three powerful men had been strung upon one frame! Yet it was not the build of a gorilla not a dwarf; rather, it suggested the solidity of the bole of a mighty oak that had assumed human form. [...] But it was the face that held Simon's fascination most intensely -- the cruel, rugged, yet strangely expressive features that even in death seemed tensed -- or ready to tense -- into a snarl of menace. Red shoulder length hair and a short ruddy beard framed those menacing features --Das ist nicht der biblische Kain, sondern Karl Edward Wagners Kane! Und die zuvor zitierten Verse sind die abgewandelte Version eines Gedichtes, das in Reflections for the Winter of My Soul vorkommt! (1)
So that when humanity finally ends its madness and subsides into worldwide peace, we of the Order may show them the originator of their former wickedness -- and enjoin upon them the paths they must follow in the future lest that scourge be loosed upon them anew. And should they choose not those paths, there is a way to waken the Slayer!Simon reagiert mit unverhohlenem Abscheu auf den selbstgerechten Fanatismus des Alten: "In other words, you and your fellow sorcerers hope to subjugate mankind to your will."
Never had he seen a fighter such as this man! Eight or nine bandits had attacked him, and he had killed all but one. True, his mighty chest now heaved from his great exertion, and some of that blood upon him was his own, oozing from a few slight cuts on his arms and face. That proved him mortal, at least. Yet Simon knew that if the Slayer chose to attack him, he stood no chance.
Simon took another swig of the wine. In spite of the red-haired warrior's casual, even occasionally humorous, manner, he did not feel easy in his presence. The smoldering hatred was always eveident in those blue eyes, ready to blaze out again. Suddenly Simon realized the significance of that intimidating glare of hate: This was the Mark that had been placed utpon the Slayer, that all men might know and fear him. Dort heißt es am Ende: "Then the defiant one he cursed in rage/ To bleak, eternal wanderings, and laid/ On him the Slayer's Mark, that all might know". In Wagners Original lauten die letzten Zeilen interessanterweise so: "This rebel he cursed in rage to bleak, eternal, wandering,/ And gave him eyes of a killer, so all know the Mark of Kane." Simon realisiert also das, was bei Wagner offen ausgesprochen worden war.
It was his eyes that bothered Troylin. He had noticed them from the first. It was to be expected, for Kane's eyes were the eyes of Death! They were blue eyes, but eyes that glowed with their own light. In those cold blue gems blazed the fires of blood madness, of the lust to kill and destroy. They poured forth infinite hatred of life and promised violent ruin to those who sought to meet them.Beim Abschied sagt Kane zu Simon: "I think that you wander under a bit of the same curse that drives me, and I see some of the same hatred in your eyes".
… by Heaven, which He holds, and the abyss,And the immensity of worlds and life…Homage he has from all – but none from me:I battle it against him… till the greatConflict shall cease, if ever it shall ceaseWhich it ne’er shall, till he or I be quenched! And what can quench our immortality,Or mutual and irrevocable hate?
A momentary terror gripped him. The air, which some philosophers felt pervaded all things, was but a thin blanket about the earth. Nature, far from abhorring a vacuum, appeared ro be almost entirely one colossal vacuum extending to the ultimate boundary of space!
The thing was monstrous -- a gigantic, pusling, toadlike entity, eyeless, and snouted with a cluster of slowly-waving feelers like those of an anemone. Its non-material flesh appeared to Simon's senses as of a blotchy, fungoid texture and color; the moon seemed to him to float at its center in lieu of a heart.
This one seemed a bladdery, reddish-purple head, smooth like an octopus, feature-less save for two great opening eyes and two writhing masses of more than a dozen tenatcles.
Simon gaped as that monstrous world swelled and grew in his vision [...] It was huge beyond conception; he sensed that more than a thousand worlds like the earth could easily be swallowed by it. Its banded surface roiled and seethed as it rolled, and at eache pomderous rotation he saw a great reddish eye-shaped splotch upon its equator, widening or narrowing as it swirled like a planet-devouring whirlpool. This time there was no nebulous Archon surrounding the globe, but Simon sensed that the seething world was itself infused with a monstrous life. Its many-clolored bands seemed to pulse as upon the flesh of a spinning jellyfish, its reddish eye-splotch to wrinkle and writhe as if it glowered malevolently ...Und natürlich stößt Simon jenseits der Saturnbahn unerwarteterweise auf zwei weitere Planeten und ihre Sphären -- die der Antike unbekannten Uranus und Neptun.
This was the Music of the Spheres that Pythagoras and other exceptionally psychic humans had long ago sensed -- but, how naively optimistic had been their interpretation of it! Simon recalled the old tale of the king who roasted his enemies alive inside a hollow bronze bull whose nostrils were fashioned in such a way that the death-screams emerged as lovely, haunting harmonies ...Als Simon den Punkt erreicht, der in der antiken Weltvorstellung der Fixsternhimmel gewesen wäre, überkommt ihn die kurze Vision unzähliger Galaxien und eines auf ewig expandierenden und wieder in sich zusammenfallenden Universums.
Out there lie hundreds of thousands of other humans, preparing for sleep, or thievery, or lovemaking, or who knows what else -- and beyond them in this wide, nighted world lie millions more. Only a small fraction of them are True Spirits such as we, Simon -- yet, who is to judge which those few are? But tonight I ask you to identify yourself with those unsouled millions who wrangle and fight, breed and strive and die only for gain or that their progeny might live. Think of them, Simon, feel for them, make of them an anchor for your soul, otherwise, you might never return ...Chronologisch folgt auf The Throne of Achamoth der Roman The Drums of Chaos, in dem unser Held dann tatsächlich Jesus von Nazareth begegnet.
During the consulship of Paulus Fabius and Lucius Vitellius (34 u. Z.), the bird called the phoenix, after a long succession of ages, appeared in Egypt and furnished the most learned men of that country and of Greece with abundant matter for the discussion of the marvellous phenomenon.
Over ten thousand years ago, when the minions of Set and Apophis threatened to burst forth upon the world, he chose as the world's defender a king who was a barbarian -- and the king was victorious, aided by the sign of the Phoenix which Epimetrius caused to be inscribed upon his sword blade.
What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie?
I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky.
The subtle tongue, the sophist guile, they fail when the broadswords sing;
Rush in and die, dogs -- I was a man before I was a king.
Is not hope but a torture in such a world as this -- a device of the Elder Gods, to extract as much pain as possible from us earthly creatures, that they might feed upon that pain --?Der mystische Vogel weiß darauf überraschenderweise keine eindeutige Antwort zu geben:
I do not know. I am not a god, as these Khemites seem to believe, but only a finite being even as you, longing to correct the things that lead to horror and darkness.
When unto the Sixth Pylon thou dost come, speak these words: Lady of Light, mighty in the power of thy voice, none knows thy sorcerous reach not yet thine age. Its like has not been known from the beginning.
The Inner Temple is old, older than Memphis itself. It was already here when Menes, the first pharaoh, established the city. Within it, according to the writings of the ancient sorcerer Zazamamkh (12), stood the Eidolon of Sebek -- the Golden Crocodile between whose jaws countless screaming virgins were torn. Such sacrifices, dating back to ancient Stygian times, caused Menes to expel the priests of the crocodile god, level their temple, and seal off the nether fane -- the Inner Temple [...] The memory of Sebek's worship was expunged from the landGleichfalls von Bloch entlehnt ist "mad Luveh-Keraph, priest of Bast", dessen Schriften Menophar nebenbei erwähnt.
Spargos of Megalopolis was evidently no piker when it came to funding a party, and Simon decided he liked both him and his wife; they were frank of speech and, despite a bit of genteel reserve, repectful and friendly toward their guide and even their own slaves -- unlike so many of the haughty Roman and Greek tourists he had guided these last few weeks. Moreover, both were genuinely and deeply interested in Egypt's ancient monuments and the stories Simon told them.
At last, with great toil and expense, I had it [den untoten Leichnam] conveyed to wild, remote region far to the northeast, near the border of Rhaetia, and there caused it to be sunk in a tarn near the top of a high and uninhabited mountain. (14)
I have helped C.A.S. give Averoigne a pseudo-history extending back to Gallic days, when the Averones trickled in from a sunken western land & brought with them the hellish tome known in later years as Liber Ivonis or Livre d'Eibon. This dark people set up the worship of Tsathoggua, or Sadoqua in the region where they settled, so that by the Gallo-Roman period the Regio Averonum or Averonia was feared as the abode of black and unearthly sorcery.
Black & unform'd, as pestilent a ClodAs dread Sadoqua, Averonia's God. (16)
He wondered what his life would have been like had they been reunited -- and found that he could not picture it. What, after all, had he wanted with her? Marriage? Children? No, none of these meaningless things that made up the dismal, eternal whirl of countless human loves generation after generation. His love for Helen had nothing to do with all that.
(1) Bei Wagner heißt es von dem Gedicht: "The song was the work of the long dead
and ill famed poet Clem Ginech of ancient Ashertiri, whose efforts
had left those of his age uncertain whether he was a poet turned
sorcerer or the reverse".
(10) Hier bezieht sich Tierney vermutlich auf spätere ägyptische Überlieferungen, die von dem Hyksos-Pharao Apepi/Apophis erzählten, dass er "adopted Seth for himself as lord, and he refused to serve any god that was in the entire land ex[cept] Seth." (The Quarrel of Apophis and Seqenenre)
Etwas später werden außerdem die "Texts of Meidum by Teta, chief magician of Khufu" erwähnt.
